The Value Of A Human Life

Our society is progressively diminishing the value of a human life at a rapid rate. When it comes to people dying because of guns, drunk driving, poor road conditions, etc, the value of human life is still very evident. Laws are made with lightning speed to prevent further lives from being lost. However, the life of the chemically sensitive / chemically injured individual appears to be viewed by those in power and authority as “necessary human collateral damage” for our modern daily lifestyle. No laws are made to prevent this illness or to provide any sort of support network for those who acquire this illness.

If you are reading this and you don't know about the unique needs of the chemically injured / chemically sensitive individual, click here for a list of some unique requirements that that these individuals face.

Globally, to my knowledge, there is no country and no government that is advocating for the life of the chemically sensitive individual. Here in Canada, we have government funded health care – rich and poor get equal health care coverage. However, the chemically sensitive patient is not accommodated in our health system. Even though chemical sensitivity is a recognized disability under our human rights code, there is not even one hospital in all of Canada that accommodates this illness.

In the 2006 documentary “The Toxic Clouds of 9/11”, the US Chief Investigator for the Office of EPA Ombudsman, Hugh Kaufman, stated: “One of the things that we found in our investigation of the World Trade Centre case and is also occurring in response to the Hurricane Katrina case, is that economics is trumping public health and environmental protection.”

Over and over again, the economic interests of the chemical industry and the revenue that comes into the government as a result of this industry, supersedes in value the protection of human life and human health. Globally, governments have abandoned their role to protect us from the health hazards of toxic chemicals. Governments typically minimize the health hazards and frequently portray the products containing toxic chemicals as safe, and assure us that our health will not in any way be harmed. Trusting government to protect you is basically going to leave you unprotected. Consequently, you need to educate yourself on how to protect yourself.

It has been said by many, that the chemical injured / chemical sensitivity community greatly needs a vehicle to be a loud voice to governments, a voice that the governments can not ignore. In other words, it must be a voice that is united, strong and global. It must send out a very clear, distinct message that is easy to understand. It also must be a message that will not allow for the following typical governmental responses:
1) ignore the message.
2) side-step the message.
3) postpone acting.
4) give lame reasons for not being able to act.
5) double-talking that results in no concrete action.
6) deny the need for action.

It must be a message that will:
1) propel governments into effective action, and
2) bring about life-saving change.

A large number of ideas have already been tried, and have not worked. Unfortunately, many of the effective roads that might achieve this goal require mega dollars, which the vast majority of us don’t have.

Here at Health Risk Navigation Inc. we want to state emphatically that as a company, we highly value human health and human life. So, we want to hear from you. What suggestions do you have that will enable us to achieve this goal? By pooling our ideas, hopefully we can come up with an effective method that will enable us to jump this major hurdle. No idea will be considered foolish, so please share as many ideas as you can come up with. We deeply appreciate any contribution you can make in this endeavour. Contact information is on the Contact Us page.
