General Information:
Guiding
Principles For Visiting The Chemically Sensitive
DO NOT VISIT the Chemically Sensitive person, if it is not
possible to accommodate these restrictions. You don’t want to inadvertently make
them sick. The sicker the person, the stricter the
guidelines must be followed!
► Never wear perfume of any kind, this includes
essential oils.
► Never wear chemical insect repellent of any
kind on your person.
► Never
wear any kind of scented product.
► Always
check to ensure that there is nothing scented on your person.
► Always
review all the personal care products you are using and make certain they
are all unscented. This would include:
♦ Soaps
♦ Oils
♦ Creams
♦ Powders
♦ Sun-Screens
♦ Make-up
♦ Deodorants
♦ Antiperspirants
♦ Sanitary Napkins
♦ Shampoos
♦ Conditioners
♦ Shaving Cream
♦ After-Shave Lotion
♦
Hair Dyes / Bleach
♦ Hair Perms
♦ Hair Straighteners
♦ Hair Sprays
♦ Hair Gels
♦ Etc., etc.
► Scented skin products will often wash off
the skin with one to four washings.
►
Scented hair products often are
not easily washed out. Scented hair products may wash out in four to seven
washings. If the hair products are heavily scented, sometimes it will take a
whole month of washings to remove the scent and sometimes the scent does not
wash out at all. Also, some hair dyes and perms are scented in such a way that
the scent is not removable. In these cases, the scent is only removed by cutting
the hair. If you cannot remove the scent, one possibility is to cover your hair
with a plastic cap. Verify with the person first, as some chemically sensitive
individuals can’t tolerate exposure to plastic.
► Always review the clothes you will
wear.
► Never wear new clothing until the
‘new clothing’ smell is washed out. Most clothing is treated with formaldehyde
and it takes approximately six washes to remove the formaldehyde.
► Never wear clothing that retains
the smell of:
♦ Scented Detergent
♦ Scented Fabric Softener
♦ Dry Cleaning Solutions
♦ Stain Removers / Bleach
♦ Previously Worn Perfume
♦ Perfumed Sachets
♦ Cigarette Smoke
♦ Smoke of any Kind
♦ Insect Repellents
♦ Pesticides
♦ Moth Balls
♦ Cedar Chips
♦ Gas / Oil / Grease
♦ Diesel Fumes
♦ Asphalt / Tar
♦ Paints / Glues
♦ Cleansers
♦ Solvents
♦ Etc.,
etc.
►►Helpful Tip: Put the
clothes you will wear to visit a Chemically Sensitive person in a paper bag or
in a cellophane bag. This will protect the clothes from picking up a scent from
other scented clothing or from other scented surroundings.
►►Other Suggestions:
(Give people suggestions on what soaps they can use, etc. Make these
principles unique according to your individual needs.)
